Spin dynamics in CdSe-based colloidal nanostructures.

In the past few years, the number of applications involving colloidal nanostructures (NS) has increased dramatically. Among the plethora of colloidal core/shell NS, CdSe-based heterostructures have attracted more attention due to the high master degree their colloidal synthesis. Indeed these nanocrystals are routinely used in display screens as well as very promising in solar cells as light concentrator. Besides these commercials applications, colloidal nanostructures are of great interest regarding more fundamental applications such as quantum optics and spintronic. A prerequisite for using colloidal NS in such applications is the comprehensive knowledge of the spin dynamics as well as the ability to tune them.

 

Spin relaxation times were measured from dynamics of the magnetic-field-induced circular polarization degree controlled by exciton thermalization on the Zeeman sublevels split by magnetic field. CdSe/CdS samples having various core size and shell shape/size have been investigated. Strinkingly the spin dynamics is shown to strongly depend on the core size, regardless the shell parameters. These results point towards an universal mechanism in the spin dynamics of CdSe-based NS.
